About The Scottsdale 20-30 Club
The Scottsdale 20-30 Club was founded with the named objective to support children's charities. By hosting special events, the Club draws the community together to raise funds for, and to educate our citizens about the financial, medical, and emotional needs of Arizona's children. The Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club members come from all professions and walks of life. Our Club differs from other service organizations in that we not only raise money for children's charities, but also encourage "hands on" interaction with the children we support. This active participation serves to strengthen our relationships with those we serve, maintains motivation, and produces a high degree of personal satisfaction.
As would be expected of a group of young men in their 20s and 30s, the members of the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club enjoy many other benefits of the Club. Members meet twice each month for one "formal" meeting at one of several Scottsdale restaurants and one "informal" meeting typically held at a member's home.
Some of the Club's activities include the Scottsdale 20-30 Club Fishing Derby for Children, taking members of the Boys and Girls Clubs to baseball games, providing Christmas trees to needy families and refurbishing older homes for underprivileged families. The Club's first fundraiser was a raffle held in conjunction with the WTC Tennis Tournament that raised over $10,000 for the Dine Center. Just last year the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club was instrumental in raising over $70,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation alone!
History
The Scottsdale Club is one of four Valley Active 20-30 clubs and was chartered in 1987 by five young, tenacious Scottsdale men who wanted to build a forum for people desirous of giving back to their community. This forum enabled them to enjoy the camaraderie arising from an association of like-minded individuals with similar goals.
Active 20-30 International
Active 20-30 International had its beginnings in 1922 when young men in two widely separated communities of the United States saw the need for a service club for young men. They found that established service clubs were dominated by older men, run by older men, and whose officers were invariably much older men. This realization led those groups of ambitious young men to stray away from existing groups and organize a club of their own.
These pioneers created clubs that shared the ideal that young men should have a chance to engage actively in service to their communities; where young ideas, backed by enthusiasm and the energy of youth, could share in the civic responsibilities on an equal basis with clubs composed of older men. Two organizations, Active International in Aberdeen, Washington and 20-30 International in Sacramento, California were formed. Both the International and Active International Associations were charter members of the World Council of Young Men’s Service Clubs (WOCO).
In 1959, President Norm Morrison of 20-30 and President Ken Helling of Active exchanged a letter renewing the long standing proposal that these two identical young men’s service clubs should merge. Between 1959 and 1960 meetings were held between the two groups, culminating with the merger of the two groups into Active 20-30 International on August 1, 1960. While the mechanics of the merger were being formulated each organization maintained its separate administrative structure, officers, and National Office through its convention year. In October 1960 the first combined magazine, Active 20-30, made its appearance and the first convention of the Active 20-30 International was held in Tucson Arizona July 10-14, 1961 where the Constitution and bylaws were officially adopted.
Active 20-30 International has grown to include National Associations in Canada, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and United States.
